ሰማያዊ ፓርቲ የጠራው ታላቅ ሰላማዊ የተቃውሞ ሰልፍ ግንቦት 25 ቀን 2005 ዓ.ም በርካታ ሕዝብ በተገኘበት ደማቅ ሆኖ ተካሂዷል፡፡ ለዚህ ሰልፍ መሳካት ከፍተኛ ድጋፍና አስተዋፅኦ ላደረጉ የፖለቲካ ፓርቲዎች፣ የሲቪክ ማህበራት፣ የመገናኛ ብዙኃንና በሰልፉ ለተሳተፉ ዜጎች እንዲሁም ሰልፉ በሰላም እንዲጠናቀቅ ለረዱ የፀጥታ ኃይሎች ፓርቲያችን ልባዊ ምስጋናውን ያቀርባል፡፡

ከዚህ በተቃራኒ ግን ይህንን ሰላማዊ የተቃውሞ ሰልፍ ተከትሎ የገዥው ፓርቲ ባለስልጣናትና የመንግስት ተወካዮች የተለመደውን ተልካሻ አስተያየቶች ሰጥተዋል፡፡ የገዥው ፓርቲ ተወካይ ሰልፉን አስመልክቶ በሰጡት አስተያየት “የሐይማኖት አክራሪነት አጀንዳው አድርጎ ሲንቀሳቀስ የነበረው ሰማያዊ ፓርቲ ዛሬ በጠራው ሰላማዊ ሰልፍ ድብቅ አጀንዳው ገሃድ ወጣ” በማለት በሰጡት አስተያየት ፓርቲውን ለማንቋሸሽና ለማራከስ ሞክረዋል፡፡ ይህም ፓርቲውን በእጅጉ ያስቆጣ ነው፡፡ ይህ ዓይነቱ መሰረተ ቢስ ፍረጃ የገዥው ቡድን አባላት ለንግግራቸውና ለሚሰጡት አስተያየት ሚዛን የሌላቸው ከመሆኑ ውጭ በፓርቲው ፕሮግራምም ሆነ እንቅስቃሴ ከአሸባሪነት ጋር የሚያገናኘውን አንዳችም ነገር አልጠቀሱም፡፡ ፓርቲው በሕጋዊ መንገድ ተመዝግቦ እየተንቀሳቀሰ የሚገኝ እና በሕገ መንግስቱ በተሰጠው መብት ተጠቅሞ በሕጋዊ ሥነስርዓት ያደራጀውን ሰላማዊ የተቃውሞ ሰልፍ በእንዲህ አይነት መንገድ መፈረጅ ሰልፉ ከተጠራበት ዓላማና መንፈስ በእጅጉ የራቀ አስተያየት ሆኖ አግኝቶታል፡፡

ፓርቲው ከዚህ በፊትም በተደጋጋሚ በሰጣቸው መግለጫዎች በእስልምና እምነት ተከታዮች ላይ የሚደረገውን ጣልቃ ገብነት መቃወሙ ይታወሳል፡፡ ይህንኑ ጥያቄ በተቃውሞ ሰልፉ ላይ ወደ አደባባይ ይዞ መውጣቱ ሕገ መንግስታዊ የመብት ጥያቄ መሆኑን ይገነዘባል፡፡ ከባለሥልጣኑ የተሰጠው አስተያየት ግን የእስልምና ሐይማኖት ተከታይ ዜጎች በሰላማዊ መንገድ የተቃውሞ ጥያቄ ማቅረባቸውን ገዥው ፓርቲ በበጎ ጎን አለማየቱንና የመብት ጥያቄ የሚያነሱ ዜጎችን ሁሉ ወደ ሽብርተኝነት ፍረጃ ለመክተት የሚያደርገውን ጥረት የሚያመላክት ሆኖ አግኝተነዋል፡፡ በተጨማሪም ገዥው ፓርቲ የእስልምና እምነት ተከታዮችን ኢትዮጵያውያን ዜጎች እንደሆኑ አድርጎ እንደማያያቸውም ሰማያዊ ፓርቲ ተገንዝቧል፡፡

የመንግስት ተወካይ የሆኑት ባለስልጣን በበኩላቸው በሰጡት አስተያየት በሰላማዊ መንገድ ተጠይቆና ታውቆ መንግስት ራሱ ያመነውና እጅግ ሰላማዊ የሆነ የተቃውሞ ሰልፍ እንዲካሄድ ያደረገን ፓርቲ ውጭ የሚገኙ ኃይሎች ተላላኪ አድርጎ ማቅረብ የአብዬን ወደእምዬ እንደሚባለው መሆኑን እየገለፅን ይልቁንም በሕጋዊ መንገድ ተመዝግቦ የሚንቀሳቀሰውን ፓርቲያችንን መንግስት ከልቡ ሊቀበለው እንዳልቻለ አስገንዝቦናል፡፡ በተጨማሪም ይህ አባባል ሰማያዊ ፓርቲን የማይመጥን፤ ፓርቲውም በተግባር እያሳየ ያለውን ሰላማዊ የፖለቲካ እንቅስቃሴ የሚጥስ በመሆኑ አጥብቀን እናወግዘዋለን፡፡ እኝሁ የመንግስት ባለስልጣን በሰላማዊ ሰልፉ የተላለፉት መልዕክቶች ህገ መንግስቱን የሚንዱ ናቸው በማለት በደፈናው ህዝብን ለማታለል ከመሞከራቸው በተለየ የትኛው ሃሳብ የትኛውን የሕገ መንግስት ድንጋጌ እንደሚፃረር ካለማመልከታቸውም በላይ ፓርቲው በፍርድ ቤት ጉዳይ ጣልቃ እንደገባ አድርጎ ለማሳየት መሞከር የመንግስትን ግብር ለሰማያዊ ፓርቲ መስጠት ከመሆኑም ሌላ ላም ባልዋለበት ኩበት ለቀማ ያደርገዋል፡፡

በመጨረሻም የእስልምና እምነት ተከታይ ዜጎቻችን ማንኛውንም የመብት ጥያቄ ከሌሎች ወገኖቻቸው ጋር በሰላማዊ መንገድ የማቅረብ ሕገ መንግስታዊ መብታቸው መሆኑን መንግስትም ሆነ ገዥው ፓርቲ እንዲያውቀው እያሳሰብን፤ ሰማያዊ ፓርቲ ከመንግስትም ሆነ ከገዥው ፓርቲ በሚሰጥ ማንኛውም ማስፈራሪያ ከጀመረው የሰላማዊ ትግል ጉዞ ፍፁም ወደ ኋላ እንደማይል፤ ይልቁንም የተነሱትን የሕዝብ ጥያቄዎች መንግስት በሦስት ወራት ውስጥ ምላሽ እንዲሰጥ አሁንም በድጋሚ ማሳሰብ እንፈልጋለን፡

የሚሆን የማይመስለው ሆነ፤ ልቦች በአንድነት ዘመሩ፤ የደስታ እንባ ፈሰሰ፤ አእዋፍ በደስታ አብረው እስኪቀዝፉ ድረስ የነጻነት ድምጽ የነጻነት ጩኸት አየሩን ሞላው፤ የሕዝብ አሸናፊነት በግልጽ ገኖ ታየ፤ የታፈነው የድምጽ ማእበል ግድቡን ትሶ ወጣ፤ የምን እንደረግ ይሆን ጭንቀት እትትም ተደረመሰ፤ ምድር የጠበበች እስኪመስል ሽዎች በነጻነት ፈሰሱባት፤ በእውነት 1997ን በ2005 አየነው። ገዥዎቻችን የሕዝባችን የአልገዛም ባይነት ወኔ ባልተቋረጠው አፈናቸው ተዳፈነ እንጅ ፈጽሞ እንዳልሞተ በእርግጥ ባይኖቻቸው አዩ። ልዩነትን የሰበኩት ሲሳቀቁ ፀንቶ የነበረው የፍርሃት ግንብ ኢያሪኮ በሰላም በፍቅር በአንድነት መዝሙር ተደረመሰ እሁድ ግንቦት 25 2005 ዓ/ም።

በ1997 ዓ/ም ቅንጅት ካዘጋጀውና እስካሁንም ድረስ ትዝታው ከሕዝብ ህሊና ካልጠፋው ሰላማዊ ሰልፍ ወዲህ የመጀመሪያ የሆነው የግንቦት 25ቱ ሰልፍ መፈቀድን በተመለከተ አንዳንዶች ወያኔ ህዝብን ለመያዝ፣ ከሕዝብ ለመታረቅ ያደረገው ዘዴ ነው ይላሉ። ሲያስረዱም በሕዝብ ዘንድ ከፍተኛ ቁጣ ቀስቅሶ የነበረውን የአማሮችን ከቤኒሻንጉል መፈናቀል ቀልብሶ ተፈናቃይ አርሶ አደሮችን ወደ ነበሩበት ለመመለስ መሞከሩ፣ ጥቂት ቢሆኑም በሙስና ተዘፍቀዋል በሚል የራሱን የወያኔን ባለስልጣናት ዘብጥያ ማውረዱን ይጠቅሱና አሁን ደግሞ በሰማያዊ ፓርቲ የተጠየቀውን የሰላማዊ ሰልፍ እናድርግ ጥያቄ መፍቀዱ ወያኔ አንድም በአባይ ግድብ ምክንያት በተለይ ከግብጽ ጋር የገባበት እሰጥ አገባ ስላሳሰበው ሕዝባችንን ባንድነት ለማቆም ከማሰብ የተደረገ ነው ሲሉ በሌላ በኩል ደግሞ በሰባዊ መብት ረገጣ አይሆኑ እየሆነ ያለው ወያኔ የእርዳታ ሰጭ ሀገሮችንና ድርጅቶችን ቀልብ ለመግዛትና የውጭውን ማሕበረሰብ አይን ለመሳብ ያደረገው ነው በማለት የተቻሉ። ተችዎች ይህን ይበሉ እንጅ ከሰልፉ ትቂት ቀናት ቀደም ብሎና ከሰልፉም በሗላ በወያኔ መንደር እየሆነ የነበረውና ያለው ግን ይህን አያረጋግጥም ነበር።

ጠቅለል ባለ መልኩ የሰሞኑን ሰልፍ በተመለከተ ወያኔ ውጥረት ውስጥ ገብቶ በዚህ የተነሳም ፈቅዶ ሊሆን ይችላል፤ ካለፉት ዓመታት ልምዳችን ስንነሳ ግን ወያኔ ሕዝብ የወደደውን አያደርግም። ሕዝብ የፈለገውንም አይሰጥም። እራሱ የመረጠውን በራሱ ጊዜና እቅድ መከወን ነው የሚያስደስተው። ከዚህ በፊት ብዙዎች ስለሕዝባችን ብዙ ነገር ብለው ጽፈውም ነበር የወያኔ ፍላጎትና ምርጫ ስላልነበረ ግን መጨረሻቸው ቃሊቲ ነው የሆነው። ከሰልፉ በሗላ ከወያኔ የተሰጠው መግለጫ አይሉት ማስጠንቀቂያም የሚያመለክተው እኛ ባልፈለግነው መልኩ የሚደረግ ማንኛውም አይነት እንቅስቃሴ ”የሕዝብ ጥያቄም እንኳ ቢሆን” ዋጋ ያስከፍላል አይነት ነበር።

ወያኔ ሕወሃት የሚፈልገው በራሱ አፈ ቀላጤዎች አማካኝነት ሁሌ እንደሚነግረንም ኢትዮጵያ ኢትዮጵያ ሁና እንድትቀጥል፣ ሕዝባችንም በሀይማኖት፣ በቋንቋና በብሔረስብ ሳይከፋፈል እንዲኖር የኔ መኖርና መግዛት ጥያቄ ውስጥ መግባት የለበትም፣ ያልኩትም ያለምንም ቅድመ ሁኔታ መፈጸም አለበት ነው። አለበለዚያ ግን ኢትዮጵያ አትኖርም ሕዝቡም ይበጣበጣል ነው።

ይሁን እንጅ ወያኔ እንደሚያወራው ሳይሆን ኢትዮጵያዊያን ባለፉት ጥቂት ዓመታት በተለይም ባሳለፍናቸው ሶስትና አራት ዓመታት በከፍተኛ ሁኔታ ያሳዩት ነገር ቢኖር  ልክ እንደከዚህ ቀደሙ የተጠናከረ አንድነታቸውን ነበር። በሃይማኖት መቻቻልን መዋደድንና መፋቀርን የተለያዩ እምነት ተከታዮች ባንድ ጣራ ስር ከመኖር አንስቶ ባንድ ላይ በራሳቸው መንገድ መጸለይን፣ ላንደኛው ችግርና ዓላማ ተረዳድቶ አብሮ መቆምን በማሳየት መለያየትን መጠፋፋትን ሳይሆን አንድነትንና ወገንተኛነትን በጉልህ ለዓለም አሳይተዋል። ለወያኔ እኔ አውቅላችሗለሁ ደካማ ፖለቲካ አይበገሬነታቸውን በማሳየት የወያኔ አካሄድ ያንድነትና የጥንካሬ መንገድ ሳይሆን የመለያየትና የውድቀት መሆኑን በተግባር በደማቁ አስምረው አስመስክረዋል።

አንዳንዴ ታዲያ ከእንደዚህ ያለው አብሮ የመቆም፣ የመደጋገፍና የመረዳዳት ጠንካራ ባሕላችን በተጻራሪ የቆመው ወያኔ ከኔ መኖርና ይሁንታ ውጭ የሚደረጉ እንቅስቃሴዎች አገር ያጠፋሉ ለማለት ሲዳዳው ምን ማለቱ ነው? የኢትዮጵያ ሕዝብ አንድነት እየተጠናከረ ከመጣ ለአገዛዜ ስለሚያሰጋኝና ከኔ ውጭም ሌላ እንዲገዛ ስለማልፈቅድ በራሴ መንገድ ሀገሪቱን እበታትናታለሁ ነው? ወይስ ጦርነትን መስራት እንችላለን ብለው እንደሚፎከሩት ሀገር ለመገጣጠምም ሆነ ለማፈራረስ አቅሙ አለን ለማለት ነው? የስነ አእምሮ ጠበብት ስቶክሆልም ሲንድረም ብለው እንደሚጠሩት ሕዝባችን በሙሉ ወያኔ ከሌለ እኛም ሀገራችንም አትኖርም ብሎ እንዲያስብ የሚደረግ ጫና ነው? ወይስ ሕወሃት ከምስረታው ጀምሮ አቅዶ እየተንቀሳቀሰ የሚገኝለትን ሀገራችንን የመበታተን ተግባሩን በገደምዳሜ እየነገረን ነው?

ወያኔ ያሻውን ቢልም የኢትዮጵያ ሕዝብ ግን ከመቼውም ጊዜ በላይ አንድነቱን አጠናክሮ ሕወሃትን ማርበድበዱን ቀጥሏል። ወያኔ የአንድነትን አስፈሪነትና ሃያልነት ከ1997 ዓ/ም ወዲህ እሁድ ግንቦት 25 ባደባባይ ባይኑ በብረቱ ተመልክቷል። እስከዛሬ ላሳለፋቸው የአገዛዝ ዘመኑም ከኔ ሙሉ ይሁንታ ውጭ የሚደረጉ መተባበሮች፣ ስብሰባዎች፣ ሰልፎች ሁሉ ለሀገር አንድነት አደገኞች ናቸው ፐሮፓጋንዳ በእርግጥም ፕሮፓጋንዳ ብቻ መሆኑን ሁላችንም በተግባር አይተናል።

ወያኔ እንዲያስታውሰው የሚያስፈልገው  የቀድሞውን የወያኔ ቁንጮ ጨምሮ በዓለማችን የታወቁ ብዙ አምባገነን አገዛዞችና መሪዎች የተናገሩትንና ለማድረግ ያሰቡትን እኩይ ዓላማ ሳያደርጉና ሳያዩ ላንዴና ለመጨረሻ ጊዜ ወደ ወዲያኛው ማለፋቸውን ሲሆን፤  ሕዝቡ ግን ከፍርሃት ቆፈን ወጥቶ በበለጠ ተጠናክሮ ተፋቅሮና ተቻችሎ በአንድነት ጎዳና የነጻነት መዝሙር እየዘመረ መቀጠሉን አሰረግጦ እያሳየ መሆኑን ጭምር ነው።

Politicians meeting with Egypt’s president have proposed hostile acts against Ethiopia, including backing rebels and carrying out sabotage, to stop it from building a massive dam over the Nile River.

Some of the politicians attending Monday’s meeting with President Mohammed Morsi appeared unaware it was being carried live on TV. Morsi did not directly react to the suggestions.

Morsi called the meeting to review the impact of Ethiopia’s dam on Egypt’s share of the Nile’s water.

Younis Makhyoun, leader of an ultraconservative Islamist party, said Egypt should back rebels in Ethiopia or, as a last resort, destroy the dam. Liberal politician Ayman Nour proposed spreading rumors about Egypt obtaining advanced warplanes to scare the Ethiopians.

Egypt has in the past threatened to go to war to preserve its water share.

Egypt presidency, opposition figures discuss Ethiopia dam ‘crisis’

Opposition figures from across Egypt’s political spectrum on Monday asserted that Ethiopia’s controversial Renaissance Dam project constituted a potential “crisis” for Egypt.

The assertions were made at a meeting between President Mohamed Morsi and a group of Egyptian political figures.

The meeting was convened to discuss the findings of an eagerly-awaited report by a tripartite commission – including Egyptian, Sudanese and Ethiopian representatives – tasked with studying the dam’s potential impact on downstream states.

During the meeting, the presidency contended that the potential impact of Ethiopia’s dam project on downstream states – namely Egypt and Sudan – had not been taken into account when the dam was designed.

“It appears that Ethiopia did not deeply study the social and environmental impact of the dam on the downstream countries of Egypt and Sudan, such as possible effects on…crops and the fishing industry,” Morsi told meeting attendees.

Khalid El-Qazaz, presidential secretary for foreign affairs, said that, according to the report, a change in quality of Nile water as a result of the dam would likely harm soil fertility in both downstream states but would affect Sudan more gravely.

The president also said the report did not contain information concerning the impact of the planned Saddle Dam, a part of the project which diverts water back to theBlue Nile to allow the hydroelectric turbines to operate – an element of the project he described as “equally important” as the main dam.

“Ethiopia has to commit to a certain deadline for providing more substantial information on the impact of the dam. It also has to sign a written, internationally accountable document that guarantees the dam will not harm Egypt and Sudan,” the presidency declared.

“There is also a need for a technical committee to supervise the project.”

‘Putting differences aside’

President Morsi called on all political forces to “unite” and put differences aside for the good of Egypt. He was speaking before more than a dozen political and religious figures who had responded to an invitation to a national dialogue meeting concerning Egypt’s stance on the Renaissance Dam.

“The water issue is a matter of national security. All options must be available in dealing with the Renaissance Dam crisis,” Mohamed El-Katatni, head of the Muslim Brotherhood’s Freedom and Justice Party, said at the meeting.

Salafist Nour Party head Younis Makhioun said at the meeting that Egypt still needed to communicate at a presidential level with Sudan. He also called on Ethiopia to “immediately halt” construction of the dam until a conclusive report was produced.

Makhioun added that Ethiopia had chosen the timing to begin the construction process “because they know there is political tension in Egypt,” stressing the importance of political unity.

In comments made via Twitter following the meeting, head of the liberal Ghad El-Thawra Party Ayman Nour expressed his “surprise” that the meeting was televised, adding that attendees were not informed of this prior to the meeting “despite the sensitivity of the situation.”

Prominent liberal political commentator Amr Hamzawy, however, commended the president for providing a “transparent” account of the situation, recommending that Egypt form a “crisis management committee” to deal with the issue diplomatically.

Hamzawy also stressed that the presidency needed to maintain transparency with the public on the issue. Makhioun echoed this opinion, describing transparency as “crucial” in mobilising popular support for any move Egypt makes in response to the issue.

A number of political figures, including some leaders of opposition coalition the National Salvation Front, meanwhile, rejected the president’s invitation to Monday’s meeting, expressing concerns over the transparency and efficacy of the talks.

The last time the president called for a meeting with a diverse group of Egyptian leaders was last month, when seven Egyptian security officials were kidnapped in Sinai.

Most representatives of liberal parties declined the invitation at the time, amid an ongoing political dispute with the Muslim Brotherhood, the group from which President Morsi hails.

‘Battle not only with Ethiopia’

Some of those who spoke at the meeting brought up wider concerns about the dam project.

Al-Azhar representative Sheikh Hassan El-Shafei said that the situation was a result of the neglect of Nile Basin issues by former presidents Anwar Sadat and Hosni Mubarak.

“I remember an Ethiopian foreign minister once said during a visit to Egypt that ‘the Nile does not have wings in the air to fly to Israel, but it might have underground ones’,” El-Shafei said, hinting that Ethiopia might use the project to export Nile water to Israel, with whom it has long enjoyed good relations.

Makhioun, for his part, said that it would be “strategically dangerous” for Egypt to allow the dam’s construction, as it would provide the US and Ethiopia with a bargaining chip against Egypt and Sudan.

Magdy Hussein, head of Egypt’s Labour Party, agreed with both El-Shafei and Makhioun.

“The real battle isn’t only with Ethiopia,” Hussein said. “It is with the US and Israel.”

Morsi announced that a summary of all the recommendations to come out of Monday’s meeting would be presented to the cabinet later the same day.

The international committee looking into the effects of the dam is made up of Egyptian, Sudanese and Ethiopian representatives, as well as international experts. Since May of last year, it has been studying the impact of the planned dam project.

Last Wednesday, Egypt summoned Ethiopian Ambassador Mahmoud Dardir to express its displeasure with Ethiopia’s diversion of part of the Blue Nile as part of the preparations for the dam’s construction.

The dressing down came amid harsh Egyptian criticisms of Ethiopia’s decision to go ahead with the project without taking the technical committee’s recommendations into account.

The move to divert part of the Blue Nile, called “historic” by Ethiopian government spokesman Bereket Simon, was censured by downstream Egypt, since the step could negatively affect the latter’s annual share of Nile water.

The Blue Nile provides Egypt with the lion’s share of its annual allotment of 55 billion cubic metres of river water.

Ethiopian officials, meanwhile, have attempted to dispel fears regarding the dam’s potential impact, stressing the project would ultimately benefit all the riparian states.

በግንቦት 25-2005 ዓ.ም በቀጠለው ውጊያ በሁመራ ልዩ ስሙ በረከት በተሰኘ ስፍራ ከአምባገነኑ አገዛዝ 35ኛ ክፍለጦር እና ከሚሊሻ ሰራዊት ጋር በተካሄደው ውጊያ በተከታታይ በስምንት/8/ ዙር ፋታ የለሽና እልህ አስጨራሽ ውጊያ 148 ሙት፣ 374 ቁስለኛ፣ 31 ክላሽንኮፍ፣ጠመንጃ 47 የእጅ ቦንብ ፣2 ስናይፐር፣ 3 መትረየስና የተለያዩ ወታደራዊ ቁሳቁሶች ማርኳል።

በእለቱ በተካሄደው ውጊያ የአካባቢው ማህበረሰብ የኢትዮጵያ ሕዝብ አርበኞች ግንባር ባሳየው ከፍተኛ ወታደራዊ ጀብድ መደነቃቸውንና ድርጅቱ ያለውን ወታደራዊና ፖለቲካዊ ብቃት ያሳየ መሆኑን ገልፀው ፣ ወጣቶችም በዚህ ሃይል ጠላት ማሽመድመድ የሚችል ድርጅት መሆኑን አስመስክሯል ሲሉ ተናግረዋል።

ለስምንት ዙር ያህል በተካሄደው ውጊያ የአገዛዙ ቅጥረኛ ጦር ቁስለኞች ወደ ዳንሻ፣ ማይካድራ፣ ሁመራ የመሳሰሉት ቦታዎች በሚገኙ የጠላት የሕክምና ተቋማት ቁስለኞችን እየጫኑ ማጓጓዝ ላይ ተጠምደው እንደዋሉና ገሚሶቹ ከፉኛ በመቁሰላቸው ሕክምና እርዳታ ሳይጀመርላቸው መሞታቸው ታውቋል።

ከኢትዮጵያ ሕዝብ አርበኞች ግንባር ሰራዊት በደረሰበት ድንገተኛ ጥቃት አከርካሪው የተሰበረው 35ኛ ክፍለ ጦር በድንጋጤና ፍርሃት ውስጥ ተሸብቦ በመጨነቅ ላይ በመሆናቸው የአካባቢውን ማህበረሰብ ያለስራው እየተንገላታ እንደሚገኝ ታውቋል።

የኢትዮጵያ ሕዝብ አርበኞች ግንባር ሰራዊት አሁንም ቢሆን ወያኔው ለሕዝብ መሰረታዊ ጥያቄዎች መልስ ባለመስጠት አቋሙ የሚቀጥል ከሆነና ስለ አባይ ግድብ እያወሩ ሕዝብን ኢ-ፍትሃዊ በሆነ መንገድ መግዛቴን እቀጥላለሁ የሚል ከሆነ በሁመራ ልዩ ስሙ በረከት እንዲሁም በሉግዲ በ35ኛ ክፍለ ጦርና በሚሊሻ ላይ የተወሰደው አኩሪ ወታደራዊ እርምጃ አይነቱን ቀይሮና ተጠናክሮ የሚቀጥል መሆኑን ያስታውቃል።

በግንቦት 24 እና  25-2005 ዓ.ም በተካሄደው ውጊያ በድምሩ 192 ሙት 440 ቁስለኛ ቁጥራቸው የበዛ ተተኳሽ መሳሪያዎችን ከነትጥቃቸው በመማረክ የታሪኩ አካል የሆኑ  ተዋጊ አርበኞች እንዳሉት እኛ ለሀገራችን ኢትዮጵያና ሕዝቧ እስከ ሕይወት መስዋዕትነት ለመክፈል ፊት ለፊት በጠመንጃ አረር እየተፋለሙ እንደሚገኙና ትግሉ ለመላው የኢትዮጵያ ሕዝብ ጥቅም ሲባል የሚደረግ እንደመሆኑ መጠን የሁሉም ርብርብና ተሳትፎ አስፈላጊና የውዴታ ግዴታ በመሆኑ የአገራችን ችግር መፍትሔ ለመስጠት በአምባገነኑ የወንበዴ ቡድን በሆነው ወያኔ ላይ እንዝመት ሲሉ ጥሪያቸውን አስተላልፈዋል።

SMNE Calls on Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn to Lead Ethiopia Towards Change by Answering the Demands of the People

Dear Prime Minister Hailemariam,

On behalf of the Solidarity Movement for a New Ethiopia (SMNE), I, as the SMNE’s executive director, am writing to you regarding the peaceful rally that took place in Addis Ababa yesterday, June 2, 2013. We highly commend you and the TPLF/EPRDF for allowing the rally to proceed without interference. Even though freedom of assembly is allowed under the Ethiopian Constitution; since 2005, Ethiopians have been denied this right. For the first time in eight years, after some negotiation with the Semayawi (Blue) party’s leadership to change the date, the TPLF/EPRDF government agreed to provide the permit that allowed the Ethiopian people the right to express their beliefs without arrests, brutality or death.

In response to this opportunity, an astounding number of Ethiopians came out—estimated at hundred of thousands—all to show their support for change. No one expected such a response, even the leaders of the rally; but it serves as an important revelation to all of us as to the deep thirst for freedom, justice, peace and opportunity that is within the hearts and minds of Ethiopians. That same thirst has united Ethiopians of different ethnicities, religions, genders, regions, socio-economic levels and political alliances in their call for change.

First of all we truly commend you, Mr. Prime Minister for allowing this rally to go forward. It shows a different kind of leadership—even though it is under the same TPLF/EPRDF government—because it takes strength, principle and wisdom to hear the discontent of the people. You may also better understand the risks of ignoring the very real rumblings of the people on the ground, which will not go away until they are genuinely addressed. It is even more important in this changing world where support from the people makes a difference in a government’s ability to function and be secure.

Like your predecessor, Meles, you could have ordered TPLF/EPRDF security forces to gun down our young people, arrest the leaders of the protest or to detain large numbers of demonstrators; however, you did not. We believe you, and other members of the TPLF/EPRDF, only allowed this rally to proceed because you may be more ready to listen to the people than ever before.

This should not only be applauded by us, but should also be recognized by others such as national and international human rights groups, civic organizations, donor countries, religious leaders and defenders of the law and freedom who have been wanting good governance, democracy and respect for human rights to come to Ethiopia.

Secondly, the rally itself was historic in nature by being very peaceful and we want to give credit to the police and security forces for not interfering in the peaceful demonstration. Though they were present, they treated people with respect. No one was arrested or detained and no one was harmed, harassed or threatened to our knowledge. This is exemplary.

Thirdly, we give enormous credit to the hundreds of thousands of Ethiopians who came out from their homes to show their support for change. Regardless of what political viewpoint one might hold, we should all be proud of how well they presented themselves and in doing so, represented all Ethiopians as they shouted during the rally the following: “We cannot be divided by our ethnicity! We cannot be divided by our religion.”

The rally was carried out with great discipline, respect, civility and basic good manners towards others. There was no bloodshed or destruction. From start to finish it was peaceful. It makes Ethiopians a shining example to the world and is evidence once again that we are not people of violence, but people who seek a better future for the country we all share and love. Congratulations to the people!

Fourthly, we believe the Semayawi (Blue) party leadership, who called for this rally, should be commended for their extraordinary leadership in organizing and carrying out a peaceful protest where the diverse people of Ethiopia could demand the God-given rights of all Ethiopians.

First of all, their name, Semayawi, which means “blue”, denotes the calm and peace one sees on the colour of the clear sky and gentle flowing of the deep sea waters. The name reflects the nature of the movement as one that seeks to move an inclusive Ethiopia forward, but not by turbulence or violence but peacefully and with determination and persistence. Their expectations of participation were for several thousand participants. They were obviously greatly surprised with the huge numbers of people who came out.

Another excellent outcome was the diverse makeup of those participating in the rally. It demonstrated how dissatisfaction with the status quo was not merely a position held by a few but that it was widespread at the grassroots level. The people who came were not only from the Blue party, but were from different political parties, ethnicities, religions and regions.

Those rallying certainly included opposition members, but we believe it also could have included some who were pro-TPLF/EPRDF who saw the need for reforms. Among the participants were Muslims, Christians, non-believers, women, men, young, old, public servants, unemployed, students, teachers, business owners, religious leaders, the healthy, the disabled and in general, people from all walks of life.

This rally was only held in the capital city, but if Ethiopians had been given the opportunity to rally throughout our beautiful country, the number would have been in the millions. This shows that the people of Ethiopia want change. What they are demanding are four actions, which should not be difficult for the government to move forward on remedying. These include: 1) the release of all prisoners of conscience, such as politicians and journalists, 2) for measures to be taken to stop the forced eviction of Ethiopians from their homes and land, 3) to stop government interference in religious affairs, such as with Muslims and Ethiopian Orthodox, and 4) for the TPLF/EPRDF government to take action against injustice, the high cost of living and corruption. The good thing is that the protestors are asking for these peacefully.

Mr. Prime Minister,

You and the TPLF/EPRDF should understand that this is an important opportunity to act for the good of Ethiopia that should not slip from your hands. It is not in the interest of anyone, including the TPLF/EPRDF, to doggedly cling to the status quo. No longer can anyone pretend that the government is a government of the people. Instead, as the people now demand change, it clearly shows that the TPLF/EPRDF is not with the people and does not represent their interests even though the TPLF/EPRDF speaks of doing exactly that.

Governments, like Egypt, Libya and Tunisia, found themselves in similar trouble when they did not answer to the inspiration of the people. We all know what happened to them when they ignored the people and we should learn from their history. Now the response to theEthiopian people’s demands are in your hands. There is no turning back from this reality; ignoring it will only create a worse crisis. Instead, we should all look at it as a God-given opportunity to create a better Ethiopia, a New Ethiopia, for all of us. As the African proverb says, “If you want to go faster, go alone; but if you want to go further, go together.” This offer is here before you today but it may not be there indefinitely. What can you do as the leader of Ethiopia to help build the bridge to a new Ethiopia for all our people? 

Mr. Prime Minister,

We urge you to meet these demands; however, we are deeply disturbed by the statements coming from the following EPRDF officials: Ato Shimelis Kemal, the State Minister of Government Communication Affairs, Ato Redwan Hussien, the Head of the Secretarial Council of the EPRDF and Ato Bereket Simon, the Ethiopian Minister of Communication.Their statements all fail to acknowledge the great divide between those clinging to the “one group rules all” system of domination of the past and the majority wanting an inclusive Ethiopia for all of us as our future.

Furthermore, it shows a continuation of the TPLF/EPRDF efforts to try to divide Ethiopians, often by ethnicity but this time along religious lines between Muslims and Christians. It will no longer work. The Ethiopian Muslims are our precious brothers and sisters. They are our people. We do not only share land; we share blood.

The statements from Shimelis Kemal and Redwan Hussien both attempt to label some of us as terrorists, without cause, in order to prolong EPRDF hegemony. This is not only wrong, it is in error and very dangerous. They hope to label the Muslims in order to isolate them from the mainstream of Ethiopians and in order to gain support from the west in the War on Terror.  Western donors should be made aware of this unfair scapegoating.

The truth is that Ethiopian Muslims have been peacefully demanding their religious rights for over a year, as they gathered on the grounds of their own religious compound. Now TPLF/EPRDF officials are slandering them as they accuse them of being terrorists. What have they done? Nothing! In the last year, they have never vandalized anything, let alone ever harmed another human being. Yet, their leaders have been arrested and their mosque disrespected.

Their peaceful actions give evidence that they are different from what the government has portrayed them to be. They have consistently chosen a non-violent path to demand freedom from EPRDF government interference in the practice of their religion—a right guaranteed under the Ethiopian Constitution—and should not be accused of something they are not.

When they came out with the Blue party for this demonstration, they did not come out only as Muslims but they came out as human beings, asking for the same freedom, justice and peace that everyone else is demanding. There is no need to single them out from others like they were outsiders. If you saw the demonstration or viewed the pictures, you would see our beautiful people of differing backgrounds and beliefs, including Muslims, intermingled with each other in peaceful protest. There should be no boundary placed between them and others. They are us!

Mr. Prime Minister,

Let me be very clear, the SMNE is not for one group of people, but for all Ethiopians, including the TPLF/EPRDF and those who have different viewpoints, strategies or goals than we do. Will you and the government you represent do the same? There should be no “us” and “them” if we Ethiopians are to have a healthy, peaceful, prosperous society for ourselves and our descendents.

No government holds onto power forever and because of that we believe the TPLF/EPRDF only stands to gain from helping to build a society where the wellbeing and security of all people will be held in high regard—putting humanity before ethnicity. When such principles are embedded into the fabric of society we will all better flourish for no one is free until all are free. When one Ethiopian is harmed or hurt, we all are. When the pain is inflicted on one, it is inflicted on all of us.  What the people are demanding is not as a separate voice but as one people—no matter what religion, what ethnicity or from what region they come from, for we will stand together.

Some are fearful that your administration will quietly arrest, harass or intimidate leaders of the Semayawi (Blue) Party or other leaders and activists. I must warn you, Mr. Prime Minister and your government that such actions would only incite the people, especially following this government-permitted peaceful protest. What Ethiopia needs is not more arrests but for all our people to be released. We all know that the law has been repeatedly subverted for political purposes and that some of our best heroes and heroines our locked up. We call on you to release them so they might be part of building a better society. Repeal this anti-terrorism law that has been used to silence truth and the Charities and Societies Proclamation that has been used to suppress civil society. Now is the time for Ethiopians to be more united rather than divided if we are to build a shared future of hope rather than of doom.

If change does not follow these demands, the government should know that there is a limit on how much repression that people will endure. As the people of Ethiopia unite together, the likelihood of more pressure for change will only increase. There are simply not enough prisons to hold all the Ethiopians who demand change. Arresting the leaders will not make the people’s struggle die for the desire for change is here. Those who commit unjust acts against the people will ultimately be held accountable. In 2005, the government tried to stop the push for change, but here we are in 2013 and the people are still demanding it. Neither have the people forgotten those who committed the crimes of 2005. They are holding on to the belief that justice will eventually be done.

God created human beings to seek freedom. Where human beings are oppressed, there will be a struggle for liberation. Ethiopians, like others, will surely pursue freedom, especially as they embrace the shared struggle with other Ethiopians. If you, Mr. Prime Minister, as a different kind of leader than your predecessor, can lead the current government of Ethiopia to embrace a different vision from the status quo, you could be instrumental in ushering in an Ethiopia that would be a “win-win” for everybody. If not, the resistance to authoritarian rule will predictably arise and eventually, the people will bring change, but such change must be based on the right foundation so it does not simply replace one flawed system for another of the same ilk.

Mr. Prime Minister,

This is an opportunity for all of us. In light of this, we ask you, to demonstrate your leadership, even though most people believe that the TPLF leadership is using you to advance their own interests, limiting you from acting as you otherwise might do. If this is the case, this is where you should stand up for your principles and do whatever is morally right; even if you are isolated for it or must resign in protest over their wrongful control.

You will find that not only will Ethiopians stand with you, but even the people of moral fiber beyond the borders of Ethiopia will stand with you for doing the right thing. For the well being of our country, our descendants and our shared future, it is critical to give up something to get something better for all of us.

This is especially important at this critical time when external forces are talking about bombing the Grand Renaissance Dam.  According to The Associated Press articles news, entitled: “Egyptian politicians suggest attacking Ethiopia over Nile dam” published today June 03 2013. The AP reported that: “Politicians meeting with Egypt’s president on Monday proposed hostile acts against Ethiopia, including backing rebels and carrying out sabotage, to stop it from building a massive dam on the Nile River upstream” If this kind of thing happened, which we hope it will not, Ethiopia will be vulnerable. This is even more the case when the TPLF/ERPDF government fails to have the support of the people. If it happened, the powerful players of the world may side with others, not with Ethiopia.

Mr. Prime Minister,

Please take time to reflect on the gravity of the times. The decision you make at this hour is not about only saving your power or the TPLF/ERPDF government but about saving our country and the future of our people and children.

May God give you and others within the government the wisdom and insight to realize what is at risk and then the strength and courage to act accordingly. As for the SMNE, we will always work with those who are genuinely seeking a more unified, free and just Ethiopia. We will stand with the people of Ethiopia, as they demand change. If you or others in the TPLF/ERPDF are part of bringing that change, we will also stand by you.

As we look at our ancient land, we are reminded that the blood that flows through our veins and nourishes our bodies also connects us to each other as one people through our ancestors, even those beyond our regions and borders. We must care about each other if we are to thrive for no one is free until all are free.

With faith in God, He is able to multiply our efforts and our resources to build our nation to be more righteous, just and livable. No blessings should be kept to oneself or one’s own ethnic group, but also should be used to bless all Ethiopians and others, including our neighbors in the world, just like the mighty Nile River that originates with us but nourishes millions of lives with its flow.

በህዝብ አቆጣጠር አሁን ጨዋታው ተጀመረ!

ወደ "ሻርኮቹ" ይቀጥል!!

ሙስናው ላይ የተጀመረው ዘመቻ ሙስናን በስንጥር የሚያሰኝ ቢሆንም አቶ መለስ ያልደፈሩትን ሰፈር አቶ ሃይለማርያም ነክተውታልና በኢህአዴግ ታሪክ የሙስናን ሰፈር በማንኳኳት ግንባር ቀደሙ ሰው ያደርጋቸዋል። እኛም ጅምሩ መልካም ነው እንላለን። ግን ጥያቄም ማሳሰቢያም አለን። ለማንኛውም በህዝብ አቆጣጠር አሁን ጨዋታው የተጀመረ ይመስለናል።

በሙስና የተጠረጠሩ ነጋዴዎች፣ ደላሎች፣ አቀባባይ የተባሉና የመንግስት ሃላፊዎች በቁጥጥር ስር መዋላቸው ከተሰማ ጀምሮ ህዝብ በስፋት እየተቸ ነው። ኢትዮጵያ ውስጥ የተደላደለውን ሙስና ህዝብ ጠንቅቆ ከነባለቤቶቹ ያውቃል። ይረዳል። ያሸታል። ባለፈ ባገደመ ቁጥር ለድህነቱ ማስታገሻ ያላምጣቸዋል።

ሙስና ሲባል ሙስና ነው። ወንጀል ሲባል ወንጀል ነው። ህግ መተላለፍ ያስጠይቃል። አሁን እንደሚታየው ግን የጸረ ሙስናው ዘመቻ ሰፈር የለየ ይመስላል። ዋናዎቹ “ሻርኮች” አልተነኩም። ዋናዎቹ “የማበስበሻው ባህር” ፊታውራሪዎች አሁንም እያገሱ ነው። እነዚህ አገር ወዳድ የሚመስሉ  የሙስና መፈልፈያ ማሽን አምራቾች ለምን ዝም ተባሉ? የህዝብ ጥያቄ ነው? የምስኪን ዜጎች ጥያቄ ነው። በተለይም “ጠቁሙኝ እርምጃ እወስዳለሁ” በማለት ለተናገሩት አዲሱ መሪ፡፡

በኢትዮጵያ በትዕዛዝ ንብረታቸውን የተነጠቁ፣ በደል ደርሶባቸው ፍርድ እናገኛለን ብለው ወደ ህግ አምርተው በትዕዛዝ የተበየነባቸው፣ በባለጊዜዎች መመሪያ ቅርስና ርስታቸውን የተነጠቁ፣ ተራ የቀበሌ ጭቃ ቤት ሳይቀር የተዘረፉ፣ የነፍስና የወንጀል ጉዳዮች ውስጥ መዘፈቃቸው እየታወቀ ክስ የማይመሰረትባቸውና በወንጀል ተጨማልቀው አገሪቱ ላይ የነገሱ ስለመኖራቸው መነገር ከጀመረ ያው የኢህአዴግን የስልጣን ዘመን ያክል ቆይቷል።

ፍርድና ርትዕ እንዲጓደል ብር ከባንክ በትዕዛዝ ተበድረው በፌስታል የሚረጩ፣ እዳ በሚጮህበት ሆቴሎቻቸው ውስጥ አልኮሆል እያራጩ “የገበያ ወሲብ” የሚያሻቅጡ፣ የሰው ትዳር የሚደፍሩ፣ አስፈራርተውና አስገድደው አህቶችና እናቶችን ከትዳራቸው የሚለዩ፣ ቤተሰብ የሚበትኑ፣ ቀና ብላችሁ ለምን አያችሁን በሚል እስከ ነፍስ ማጥፋት የሚደርሱ ማፍያዎች ፍርድ ቤቱንና የፍትህ ደጅ ዙሪያ ገባውን ቁልፍ ተረክበው አገሪቱን እየጋለቡዋት ነው የሚለው ዜና ተብሎ፣ ተብሎ ያለቀለት የማይሸፈን የአደባባይ ጉዳይ ነው።

“ግብር ለምን ክፈሉ እንባላለን” በሚል የስርዓቱን ቁንጮዎች በመያዝ ባለስልጣናትን ከሃላፊነታቸው የሚያስነሱ፣ ግብር የሚጠየቁበትን ሰነድ ቢሮ እያሰበሩ የሚዘርፉ፣ ሰነድ የሚያጠፉ፣ ለሰሩት ወንጀል በህግ ሲጠየቁ የህግ አካሄዱን በመመሪያ የሚያሳግዱ፣ በራሳቸው ፊርማና ማህተም “በትዕዛዝ ክስ አዘጋን” ብለው ለየጋዜጣው መግለጫ የሚበትኑ ወረበሎች ስለመበራከታቸው መለፍለፍ ከተጀመረ አንድ ጠ/ሚኒስትር አልፈው ሁለተኛው ተተክተዋል።

ከጠቅላይ ሚኒስትር ቢሮ ደብዳቤ እያጻፉና ትዕዛዝ እንዲተላለፍላቸው እያደረጉ የንግድ ውድድሩን ያዛቡ፣ ህግ አክብረው የሚሰሩትን ዜጎች ከገበያና ከውድድር እንዲገለሉ ያስደረጉ፣ ኢትዮጵያን “ለጠቅላይ “ሊጫወቱባት የሚዳዳቸው ወረበሎችን ያላካተተ የጸረ ሙስና ዘመቻ ከቶውንም ተቀባይነት እንደሌለው ህዝብ እያወጋ ነው።

የፍትህ ሚኒስትሩ ከሃላፊነት መነሳታቸውን ተከትሎ የፍርድ ሂደት ያዛቡ፣ መረጃ የቀረበባቸውን ክሶች ያሳገዱ፣ በመመሪያና በተለያዩ ንክኪዎች ህግ እንዲሰቀል ያደረጉ አቃብያነህግ እንደሚታሰሩ ሰምተናል። ምርመራው በሰነድ የተደገፈ ስለመሆኑ ይፋ ሆኗል። ይህንን ዜና የሰሙ “አዋራው ጨሰ፤ በህዝብ አቆጣጠር ጨዋታው ተጀመረ” እያሉ ነው።

ፍትህ ተጓድሎባቸው የአቤቱታ ፋይላቸው የተዘጋባቸው የጨዋታውን መጀመር ሲጠብቁ ነበር። በህይወት ጉዳይ ሻርኮቹን ከሰው ፋይላቸው የተቀረቀረባቸው አሉ። ሻርኮቹን በህግ በመጠየቃቸው ብቻ እስር ቤት የተቀረቀሩ አሉ። ፍትህ እንዲዛባ አድርገው የራሳቸውን ያልሆነ ንብረት የወሰዱ አሉ። ንብረታቸውን ተዘርፈው ልመና የወጡ አሉ። ሚስቶቻቸውን ተቀምተው እጃቸውን አጣጥፈው የተቀመጡ አሉ። ብዙ ለጆሮ የሚቀፍ ወንጀል የሰሩና የሚጠየቁበትን ፋይል ያሳገዱ መጨረሻቸው ምን ይሆን? በግፍ የሞቱ ደማቸው ይጮሃል። በግፍ በልማት ስም ቤቷ የፈረሰባትና ለባለጊዜ ስፍራ የለቀቀች ደቃቃ እናት የጣር ድምጽ ይሰማል። ህግ ጎድሎባቸው፣ አቤት የሚሉበት ያጡ ወገኖች ሮሮ ከልክ አልፏል። በፖሊስ፣ በአቃቤ ህግ፣ በዳኛ፣ ከዛም በላይ በ”ተላላኪ ባለስልጣኖች” ትዕዛዝ መብቶቻቸውን የተገፈፉ የፍትህ ያለህ እያሉ ዓመታት አስቆጥረዋል።

አሁን በእኛ ሰዓት አቆጣጠር ጨዋታው ተጀምሯል። በህዝብ ሰዓት አቆጣጠር ጨዋታው ተጀምሯል። ኳሷ አደገኛ ቀጣና ውስጥ ናት። የተነቁ ፋይሎች፣ የታገዱ ጉዳዮች፣ የታደፈኑ የፍትህ ጉዳዮች ከልክ በላይ ናቸው። አሳፋኞቹም እዛው ኢህአዴግ ደጅ አረፍ እንዲሉ የተደረጉትን ጨምሮ በየደረጃው አሉ። አብረው የሚነግዱም አሉ። እነዚህን ሁሉ አልፈው መሔድ ከተቻለ ጨዋታው በትክክል በህዝብ የሰዓት አቆጣጠር ተጀምሯል። አለበለዚያ ግን የህዝብና የመንግስት አቆጣጠር ተለያይቷል። አንዱ ሲተኛ አንዱ ይነቃል። ሳይገናኙ ይተላለፋሉ።

Thousands march for rights in rare Ethiopia protest

(Reuters) – About 10,000 Ethiopians staged an anti-government procession on Sunday in the first large-scale protest since a disputed 2005 election ended in street violence that killed 200 people.

The demonstrators marched through Addis Ababa’s northern Arat Kilo and Piazza districts before gathering at Churchill Avenue in front of a looming obelisk with a giant red star perched on top, a relic of Ethiopia’s violent Communist past.

Some carried banners reading “Justice! Justice! Justice!” and some bore pictures of imprisoned opposition figures. Others chanted, “We call for respect of the constitution”.

A few police officers watched the demonstration, for which the authorities had granted permission.

“We have repeatedly asked the government to release political leaders, journalists and those who asked the government not to intervene in religious affairs,” said Yilekal Getachew, chairman of the Semayawi (Blue) Party which organized the protests.

He said the demonstrators also wanted action to tackle unemployment, inflation and corruption.

“If these questions are not resolved and no progress is made in the next three months, we will organize more protests. It is the beginning of our struggle,” he told Reuters.

Government officials were not immediately available for comment.

ANTI-TERRORISM LAW

Ethiopian opposition parties routinely accuse the government of harassment and say their candidates are often intimidated in polls. The 547-seat legislature has only one opposition member.

Though its economy is one of the fastest-growing in Africa, Ethiopia is often criticized by human rights watchdogs for clamping down on opposition and the media on national security grounds, a charge the government denies.

Critics point to a 2009 anti-terrorism law that makes anyone caught publishing information that could induce readers into acts of terrorism liable to jail terms of 10 to 20 years.

Last year, an Ethiopian court handed sentences of eight years to life to 20 journalists, opposition figures and others for conspiring with rebels to topple the government.

More than 10 journalists have been charged under the anti-terrorism law, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists, which says Ethiopia has the highest number of exiled journalists in the world.

Muslims, who form about a third of Ethiopia’s mostly Christian population, staged mosque sit-ins in 2012, accusing the government of meddling in religious affairs and jailing their leaders.

Ethiopia, long seen by the West as a bulwark against radical Islamists in neighboring Somalia, denies interfering, but says it fears militant Islam is taking root in the country.
